2025 Jan Writing Skills Workshops

NCEA (Years 10+)
NCEA Level writing
2 hours every session 9am-11am
($40 per session, total of $320 for 8 sessions)
These workshops will focus on giving students the skills they need to successfully complete a range of NCEA level writing tasks, including exam writing tasks.
Monday January 13
Introduction - Writing is a Thinking skill
We will do a range of small writing tasks to assess students current level and the skills
we most need to focus on.
Tuesday January 14
Finding and developing ideas
We will focus on how to decide what to write about when faced with a range of different tasks including informative and persuasive writing.
Wednesday January 15
Structure in Informative writing
We will look at how to plan and structure a piece of basic informative writing.
Thursday January 23
Structure in Persuasive writing
We will look at a model for planning persuasive writing and how to apply this to a range of persuasive tasks.
Friday 24 January
Planning an essay/exam response Pt.1
We will look at how to work out what an essay question requires and how to plan for this.
Tuesday January 28
Planning an essay/exam response Pt. 2
We will be looking at how to develop and change topic sentences to suit different exam
topics
Wednesday January 29
Using examples and writing detailed explanations.
We will look at how to write detailed and sophisticated paragraphs.
Thursday January 30
Writing practice
We will work on all the skills we have learned during the workshops and also on how to
write in timed conditions.
